Turnitin or Turn-it-in is the originality checking software used by Federation University to help promote a culture of academic integrity. This means being honest in the academic work that you do at University, being fair to others and taking responsibility for learning. It is as simple as producing your own work and not passing off the work of other people as your own.

Turnitin works by comparing your work against other papers in the global database or webpages, journals and other submitted documents. Some people think Turnitin is plagiarism detecting software, but that is not correct as it can't form conclusions about whether plagiarism has occurred. It can only return a similarity percentage and link to those places where similarity is detected.

Some courses require assessment to be checked via Turnitin and lecturers have set up these submission links within the course area in Moodle. This means that the lecturer can access both your assignment and the report from Turnitin. If you have not been required to submit via Turnitin, you can self assess your work using Turnitin by enrolling yourself into a Moodle area that has links to Turnitin. After self-assessment you may find that you need to improve the
paraphrasing and summarising in some sections of your work to meet the expectations of the academic writing.
